Shimobe Onsen, Yamanashi
A retro hot spring town stretching along a mountain river, famous as Takeda Shingen’s hidden hot spring.
This retro hot spring town stretches along the Shimobe River, a tributary of the Fuji River, with accommodations and souvenir shops lining the riverbank. It has a history of Approx. 1,200 years since its opening and is locally famous as Takeda Shingen’s hidden hot spring. During the Edo period (1603–1868), it was popular as a hot spring retreat, and many worshippers visiting Kuonji Temple in the same town of Minobu are also said to have stopped by.
Selected as one of Japan’s 100 Famous Hot Springs, this hot spring area lets visitors enjoy two different types of spring water. The long-loved lukewarm waters, known as nuruyu, are said to have healed Shingen’s battle wounds and are believed to be effective for cuts, bruises, burns, and similar injuries. The high-temperature “Oku no Yu,” which began flowing in 2006, is also reputed for its skin-beautifying effects.
The hot spring town is dotted with a wide range of hotels and ryokan, making it easy to choose based on your preferred bath style, cuisine, and other features. In 2023, a day-use hot spring facility with a fitness gym and dining area also opened right in front of Shimobe Onsen Station. The Yuno Oku Kinzan Museum is also recommended, where you can enjoy impressive exhibits recreating a Sengoku-period gold mine, try gold panning, and learn about Shimobe’s history.
