Mino Washi no Sato Museum
A center for sharing Mino washi where you can also experience traditional techniques.
Mino washi, made mainly in Mino City, Gifu Prefecture, boasts a history and tradition of more than 1,300 years. Mino Washi no Sato Museum serves as a center for passing on its traditional techniques and charm to the future. Its two exhibition rooms introduce the history of Mino washi, papermaking techniques, and the process of how washi is made through a wide range of materials. The museum also regularly hosts unique special exhibitions themed around paper.
The museum also offers papermaking workshops using real tools used by craftspeople. You can make items such as Mino-size sheets and postcards, and a popular course lets you add original patterns to the washi you make yourself. Workshops generally require advance reservations, and fees start from 500 yen per person depending on the course. The shop and showroom also display and sell washi, stationery and interior goods made with washi, and small accessories. Items made with Mino washi, known for its delicate and finely textured feel, are popular not only for personal use but also as souvenirs.
