Gero Onsen Museum

This rare museum, dedicated to hot springs, explores the topic from both scientific and cultural angles. The building, made from local wood, sits on a hill and has a distinctive exterior reminiscent of a traditional white-walled storehouse, blending perfectly with the atmosphere of Gero’s hot spring town.

In the "Science of Hot Springs" section, visitors can learn about the mechanisms behind how hot springs emerge, as well as the varying mineral compositions and health benefits of different springs. Beautiful mineral formations created by hot springs are also on display. The "Culture of Hot Springs" section showcases historical artifacts that deepen understanding of Japan’s hot spring culture, which has evolved over centuries. There’s also a section dedicated to the history and characteristics of Gero Onsen.

The museum features a foot bath and a walking bath that use Gero's hot spring water, both of which can be enjoyed with just the museum admission fee. The foot bath has different temperatures depending on the spot, while the walking bath, with stones that massage your feet, offers a refreshing break during your visit. The museum shop also sells unique souvenirs, such as a "hot spring notebook" where you can record details of the hot springs you’ve visited, and magnets shaped like hot spring buns.
