Dorokyo Gorge
A vast gorge with beautiful scenery shaped by a clear stream and dramatic cliffs.
A large gorge designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty, located on the border of Nara, Mie, and Wakayama prefectures, and one of the signature hidden gems of Yoshino-Kumano National Park. The scenery, created by crystal-clear cobalt-blue waters and cliffs rising several dozen meters high on both sides of the river, is breathtaking.
From upstream, the area is known as Okudoro, Kamidoro, and Shimodoro, and the most impressive section is the Shimodoro area. Shimodoro is also called "Doro-Hatcho," where steep, rugged cliffs, giant rocks, and a gently flowing river create beautiful gorge scenery with a mysterious atmosphere. If you take a sightseeing boat, you can experience the powerful rock walls and deep gorge up close as you glide across the calm water. Another nice touch is that the guide also explains the area and points out the best photo spots. Fresh greenery in spring and autumn leaves in fall are also part of its appeal, letting you enjoy the scenery in every season.
Near the pier, you'll also find Doro Hotel, where you can enjoy light meals and drinks, making it a great place to stop by.
