Candle Island
A strange rock formation that looks like a lit candle when the setting sun aligns with its tip.
The Oki Islands are a group of Approx. 180 islands floating about 60 km north of the border between Shimane and Tottori prefectures. Rising vertically from the sea off the northwest coast of Dogo, one of the islands, is Candle Island, a strange rock formation standing Approx. 20 m tall. It got its name because at sunset, when the sun aligns with the tip of the rock, it looks like a candle with a flame burning on top.
This is a rare sight that can only be seen from a sightseeing boat on days when the season, weather, and sea conditions all come together. On board, veteran captains will also show you how to get the best shot. Advance reservations are required to board the sightseeing boat, and because timing makes an overnight stay in Okinoshima Town essential, be sure to check all conditions carefully in advance.
If the sightseeing boat is canceled, head to the Candle Island Observatory on Dogo. There are two observation points. You cannot see the sunset align with Candle Island from there, but you can still enjoy dramatic views of the strange rock formation rising from the Sea of Japan.
*As of March 2026, the walking path to Candle Island Observatory No. 2 is closed.
