Iwakuni Shirohebi Shrine
One of Yamaguchi’s leading power spots, this shrine enshrines the Munakata Sanjoshin and regards the protected white snake as a divine messenger.
The “Iwakuni no Shirohebi,” white snakes that have long lived only in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, are designated as a National Natural Monument. Iwakuni Shirohebi Shrine was founded by enshrining the deities of Itsukushima Shrine, and came into being because these white snakes had long been worshipped as divine messengers said to bring good fortune.
White snakes are said to bring prosperity in business, financial luck, and health and longevity, making this one of the prefecture’s most popular power spots. White snake motifs appear throughout the grounds, including the worship hall, purification fountain, and stone lanterns, giving the shrine a distinctive atmosphere unlike other shrines. Even the ema plaques are, of course, shaped like white snakes instead of horses, and many visitors write their wishes on them and offer them here.
This is one of several white snake-related spots scattered around the city, and a viewing facility where white snakes are kept is located next door. You can see the white snakes there even in winter, as they do not hibernate. It is also easy to visit together with Iwakuni’s famous Kintaikyo Bridge and Iwakuni Castle, both Approx. 10 minutes away by car.
