Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM]
A cultural hub where art and technology come together.
Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media is a multi-purpose cultural facility set in a corner of Yamaguchi City Central Park, affectionately known as YCAM (Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media). In addition to exhibition spaces, it includes a theater, cinema, and Yamaguchi City Central Library, bringing together art, film, performing arts, and learning in one cultural hub. Its activities focus on exploring new forms of expression through media technology, including video, sound, and communication technology. A wide range of programs are held here, from exhibitions, performances, and film screenings to children’s workshops, offering visitors a chance to experience cutting-edge creative expression from Japan and abroad.
Designed by Arata Isozaki & Associates, the building is striking for its long, horizontal form stretching Approx. 170 meters and its undulating roof, which evokes the surrounding mountains. Inside, the theater, galleries, cinema, library, and other spaces connect seamlessly, creating an open, airy feel throughout. Another distinctive feature is that it was designed not only as a place to experience art, but also as a place where works and projects are created.
Another welcome highlight is that you can casually stop by free areas such as the foyer and courtyard. Surrounded by the greenery of the park, the setting is pleasant, making it an easy stop during sightseeing in Yamaguchi for a moment with contemporary culture and technology.
