Sakai Big Fish Night Market

A summer tradition held every year at Ohama Park in Sakai City, Osaka. Said to have begun as an event where fishermen prayed for a good catch by offering fish to the enshrined deity of Sumiyoshi Taisha, the god of the sea, it dates back to the Kamakura period and boasts Approx. 700 years of tradition.

The biggest highlight is the lively nighttime fish auction. Anyone is free to join the auction, where fresh seafood is lined up for bidding. Visitors trying to get the fish they want for even a little less and vendors running the auction engage in spirited back-and-forth, filling the venue with the energy of a fishing port or market as bold voices ring out.

Around 50 kitchen cars also set up at the venue, serving local food and more. Stage events are also held, drawing many visitors from daytime onward. At night, fireworks are launched over the water. The fireworks light up the harbor for 30 minutes, bringing the festival to a dazzling finale. Paid reserved seating is also available, so if you want to enjoy the fireworks from a good spot, be sure to book early.
