Iya Valley was formed by the rushing waters of the Iya River flowing through Tokushima Prefecture. This V-shaped valley, with depths ranging from several dozen to several hundred meters, stretches for Approx. 10km and offers scenery worthy of being called a hidden gem.

In spring, fresh greenery colors the mountains, and in fall, autumn leaves line the valley, framing the emerald-green Iya River below. Each season brings a different view to enjoy. Soaking in one of the area’s famous hidden hot springs is also a great way to relax. The snowy winter scenery, when the valley is covered in white, is also बेहद beautiful, but roads may freeze, so don’t forget to equip your car with chains or snow tires if you visit by car.

Iya Valley is dotted with scenic photo spots, including the Hinokoji Valley, where a sharp curve resembles the hiragana character “hi,” and the Peeing Boy statue standing on a rock jutting out from a cliff. You can stop by them while driving along the prefectural road that runs through the valley. The Iya Kazurabashi Bridge, made from a plant called shirakuchikazura, stands 14m above the water and stretches 45m long. Known as one of Japan’s Three Most Unusual Bridges, it offers a thrilling crossing. It is also lit up at night, making its magical evening appearance well worth seeing.

When you visit Tokushima, Ryugu Cliff Park is about a 35-minute drive from the scenic Oboke Gorge. There’s a suspension bridge about 70 meters high, and from the bridge you can look out over the beautiful valley below.

After crossing the bridge and walking into the woods, there’s a nature center, though it seemed to be deserted. Surrounded by lush greenery, the view from the bridge makes for dreamy photos. It’s a nice spot to visit in Tokushima.
