Tokushima Zoo

Located in a hilly area slightly away from central Tokushima City, Tokushima Zoo sits within a spacious park that also includes an amusement park and botanical garden. Many families come here to enjoy a relaxed full day.

The zoo keeps approx. 60 species and 300 animals. They are displayed in five areas organized by the climate zones where the animals live. Highlights include the Savannah Zone, with a powerful panoramic exhibit that evokes a real savanna, and the Temperate Zone, where birds glide gracefully inside a 40-meter-diameter flying cage. Exhibits that make the most of each animal’s characteristics are well worth seeing. The Children’s Zoo, a soothing spot popular for its small animals such as squirrel monkeys and ponies, is also recommended.

Mainly on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, the zoo regularly holds events such as hands-on experiences with guinea pigs and sheep, and capybara feeding. Seasonal events are also plentiful, including summer schools that parents and children can join together and the “Night Zoo,” where visitors can observe nocturnal animals when they are active.
