Located in Higashimatsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, Otakamori is one of the Matsushima Shidaikan, four celebrated viewpoints overlooking the 260-plus islands scattered across the bay of Matsushima, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views. It is known as the “Sokan” grand view because the shape of Matsushima can be seen like a miniature landscape.
From the observation deck at the summit, Approx. 105 m above sea level, visitors can enjoy the island-dotted beauty that defines Matsushima, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views. At sunset, the sky and sea glow orange, and the silhouettes of the islands emerge, making this an ideal photo spot for a dreamlike view.

From the foot of Otakamori, the Oku-Matsushima Sightseeing Cruise operates around Sagakei Gorge, one of Japan’s Three Great Gorges. A panorama of rugged rocks, in striking contrast to the curved scenery of Matsushima Bay, spreads out before your eyes and is sure to leave a strong impression.
Nearby are the Satohama Shell Mound, one of the largest in Japan, and the Oku-Matsushima Jomon Village Historical Museum, which displays pottery and other artifacts excavated from the shell mound, allowing visitors to experience the area’s history along with its rich natural scenery.
