Mt. Kurikoma stands at an elevation of 1,626 meters, straddling the three prefectures of Miyagi, Akita, and Iwate. The surrounding landscape has been designated as a national park, preserving pristine beech forests and wetlands. There are nine climbing routes in total, ranging from beginner and family-friendly trails that lead to the peak in about two hours to advanced trails. Numerous onsen (hot springs) like the "Shinyu Onsen", surrounded by beech forests, and the "Sukawa Kogen Onsen", situated at an altitude of 1,126 meters and boasting excellent views, are dotted around the mountain.

It's also known as a mountain of flowers. Between June and July, the hiking paths are adorned with delicate flowers like Hina Sakura, the vibrant pink Iwakagami, and the pristine Iwaicho. Its autumn foliage is especially stunning. From mid to late September, the mountain displays a breathtaking contrast of the glossy red from Rowan trees, the yellow from maples, and the black from volcanic rocks.

"Iwakagami-hira" represents Mt. Kurikoma's quintessential autumn foliage spot. This slope of the mountain becomes a carpet of red and yellow, and its grandeur can only be described as breathtaking.
