Cape Sata

Cape Sata, located at the southernmost point of Japan's mainland, is one of the Osumi Peninsula's premier scenic spots. It offers sweeping panoramic views of both the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea. On clear days, Tanegashima and Yakushima islands are visible in the distance.

About 50 meters offshore from the cliffs at the southern tip, Cape Sata Lighthouse—one of Japan's oldest lighthouses—stands on Owa Island, creating a striking contrast with the blue sea. The grounds also feature a monument marking the 31st parallel north, inscribed with “31°LINE SATA” and “Cape Sata, the Southernmost Point of Japan's Mainland,” as well as Misaki Shrine, known for its deity of matchmaking.

The approximately 800-meter-long, one-way Cape Sata Walking Trail leads to the observation deck through subtropical vegetation characteristic of southern climates, including bougainvillea, cycads, and banyan trees. The exotic scenery feels like a trip abroad. The colony of cycads here is particularly valuable and has been designated a national Special Natural Monument as the “Native Habitat of Cycads in Kagoshima Prefecture.”

Visit at dusk to see the impressive sight of the sun slowly sinking below the horizon.
