Summer Kagoshima Travel Guide: A Journey Through Dynamic Scenery Shaped by Volcanoes and the Sea

This active volcano in Kinko Bay is one of Kagoshima’s most iconic sights. It is easily accessible by ferry, and viewing it from the water is one of the highlights. You can take in the powerful mountainside from the Yunohira Observatory or relax at one of Japan’s largest foot baths while enjoying volcanic scenery and views of Kinko Bay.

Located on a hill overlooking downtown Kagoshima, this popular spot offers panoramic views of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay from its observation deck. The surrounding area was the site of the final fierce battle of the Satsuma Rebellion and still retains traces of Saigo Takamori, making it an essential place for understanding Kagoshima’s history. Spots such as Saigo Cave and the Reimeikan Museum are also nearby, so you can enjoy historical walks along with the scenery.

This Japanese garden was built as a villa for the Shimadzu family. It is a borrowed-scenery garden that incorporates Kagoshima’s grand landscape, with Sakurajima used as a “garden hill” and Kinko Bay as a “pond.”
In addition to the garden, you can experience Kagoshima’s history and culture by touring the residence, exploring history at the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, or visiting the Satsuma Kiriko glass factory.

This shrine is one of southern Kyushu’s representative shrines and has a long history dating back to its founding in the 6th century. It has been passed down through repeated destruction and rebuilding due to eruptions of the Kirishima mountains, and enshrines Ninigi no Mikoto, a central figure in Japan’s nation-founding mythology. Highlights include a sacred tree about 800 years old and the “Sazare-ishi” stone, giving visitors a sense of the shrine’s long history.

This cape at the southernmost tip of the Satsuma Peninsula offers views of nearby islands, mountains, and beautiful sunsets. It is said to be the cape from which Urashima Taro departed for the Dragon Palace, and is also called “Ryugu-bana.”
You can walk along the path to near the tip of the cape, where Mt. Kaimon, nicknamed “Satsuma Fuji,” can be seen across the sea.
In summer, the blue sea and sky open wide, and you can enjoy expansive scenery formed by the surrounding islands and Mt. Kaimon.

This beautiful “Satsuma Fuji” offers panoramic views of Kagoshima’s famous sights from the summit. An active volcano standing 924 meters above sea level, it is counted among Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains and is nicknamed “Satsuma Fuji” for its well-balanced conical shape. A gentle spiral hiking trail is maintained, and from the summit you can see Lake Ikeda, Kirishima, Sakurajima, Yakushima, and more.
In summer, its graceful form stands out against the blue sky, making it one of Ibusuki’s representative landscapes.

This facility lets visitors experience sand bathing, a tradition that has continued for about 300 years. “Sunamushi” is a bathing method in which you lie in hot sand warmed by hot springs that naturally emerge along the coast. After changing into a yukata, you head to the sand bath area and are covered with sand over your whole body, offering a bathing experience that is rare even worldwide.
Being able to spend time with coastal views and the sound of the waves is also part of the appeal.

This scenic spot is known for its emerald-green plunge pool. Follow the approximately 1,200-meter one-way walking path along the stream and Ogawa Falls will appear. With a drop of about 46 meters and a width of about 60 meters, it captivates many visitors as a mystical scenic spot.
Along the way are other highlights such as Takimi Ohashi Bridge and the Bamboo Path, and in summer you can enjoy a nature walk surrounded by clear streams and trees.

Located at the southernmost point of mainland Japan, Cape Sata is one of the leading scenic spots on the Osumi Peninsula. A sweeping panorama opens up with views of both the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea, and on clear days you can see as far as Tanegashima and Yakushima.
There are many highlights, including Cape Sata Lighthouse, Misaki Shrine, and a monument marking the 31st parallel north. In summer, you can also enjoy walking paths surrounded by subtropical plants.

Located at elevations of 600 to 1,050 meters, this representative scenic area of Yakushima is known for its fantastical landscapes of deep forest and moss. Three trekking routes are maintained, from the beginner-friendly Yayoi Sugi Course to the round-trip Taiko Iwa Course, allowing visitors to see Yakusugi cedars such as Nidaio Sugi and moss-covered forests with clear streams up close.

Yurigahama Beach appears from the sea about 1.5 km offshore from Okaneku Coast on Yoron Island, generally only at low tide during mid to spring tides from spring through fall. In summer, the contrast between blue sky and sea becomes vivid, and you can experience the scenery of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay while moving slowly across the water. Many areas are also easy to access from the city center, making it convenient to add a nature experience to your sightseeing.

On Yakushima, a World Natural Heritage site, you can enjoy nature trekking through primeval forests filled with mossy woods and giant trees. In trekking areas such as Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine, the appeal lies in being surrounded by deep forest while experiencing Yakushima’s distinctive natural scenery.
In summer, many routes pass through shade or along mountain streams, allowing you to spend time feeling the forest air and the presence of water. It is popular as another way to experience Kagoshima’s nature, different from seaside scenery.

This is the original home of Shirokuma, a Kagoshima soul food made with shaved ice topped with a secret milk sauce and decorated with raisins and fruit. Created in 1949, the famous Shirokuma is known for freshly shaved ice and the gentle sweetness of homemade milk. You can try 13 variations year-round, including the standard Shirokuma.
It is a well-known shop for chilled sweets that is hard to miss during summer sightseeing in Kagoshima.

Located in Shibushi City, one of Japan’s top eel-producing areas, this is Japan’s first “eel station.” It is operated by Yamada Suisan Co., Ltd., which farms eel and produces and sells kabayaki grilled eel. At the restaurant, you can enjoy dishes such as unaju, hitsumabushi, and unadon.
The direct sales shop also sells kabayaki and gifts made with eel raised by the company, letting you enjoy Shibushi eel in a variety of ways.

This hotel stands on the heights of Shiroyama. With a distinguished history of welcoming members of the Imperial Family and notable figures from various fields, it has continued to serve as Kagoshima’s guest house in both name and reality for about 60 years.

Surrounded by the atmospheric glow of lanterns, you can experience the mood of a summer festival passed down in Kagoshima.

This is one of the largest summer festivals on Amami Oshima. One of the festival’s signature events is the boat rowing race held at Naze Port. Teams board traditional Amami wooden boats and row in unison in a powerful race.
At night, a fireworks display with about 2,000 fireworks and Hachigatsu Odori dancing are also held, letting visitors feel the island’s traditions and energy.

This traditional festival is one of Kagoshima’s representative summer events. The main highlight is the Goshinko procession held during the main festival, with a total of 2,500 participants. Centered around Tenmonkan, Kagoshima’s leading entertainment district, the procession travels about 2.5 km with traditional elements such as Tsuyuharai, Ohoko, and Goshoguruma parading in historic style.
The Chigo-age ritual, which prays for the health of small children, is also performed, offering a chance to experience traditional culture passed down in Kagoshima.
