Joyama Park (Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture)

Set on a hill in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, this park is known for its panoramic views of the Northern Alps and the city. Its history began in 1842, when Mitsutsune Toda, lord of the Matsumoto Domain, planted cherry and maple trees on the former site of Inukai Castle and opened the grounds to the public. In 1875, it became the first designated park in Nagano Prefecture.

The approximately 6.1-hectare grounds feature walking paths, a lawn, and an observation deck. In spring, the park draws many visitors as a popular cherry blossom viewing spot. From the observation deck, visitors can see Matsumoto Castle, Azumino, and the Northern Alps rising beyond them, as well as the city lights after sunset.

The park is also dotted with literary monuments honoring local figures such as Retsu Asai, Hisajo Sugita, and Utsubo Kubota, creating a setting where nature and culture come together. Despite its proximity to downtown, it offers a peaceful place to relax amid scenery that changes with the seasons.
