COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN
An art spot where you can enjoy Yufuin’s nature, contemporary art, and architectural beauty all at once.
Surrounded by the natural beauty of Yufuin, this contemporary art museum is known for the harmony between its architecture and contemporary art. It opened in 2017 and held its grand opening in 2022 after expanding its exhibition area.
Designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the museum features a series of small roofs that help it blend into Yufuin’s village landscape. Its exterior walls use charred cedar, and the interior highlights natural materials such as wood, earth, washi paper, and water.
Inside the museum, long-term exhibitions feature works by eight leading Japanese contemporary artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Tatsuo Miyajima. Beyond the artworks, major highlights include the majestic view of Mount Yufu through the windows and the architecture itself, which skillfully incorporates light, wind, and water.
The museum also has a cafe and shop. Through the cafe’s large windows, sweeping views of Mount Yufu unfold, allowing visitors to spend a relaxed time while taking in a landscape where art and nature coexist.
Wrapped in Yufuin’s peaceful natural setting, it is one of Kyushu’s leading art spots, offering both some of Japan’s finest contemporary art and architectural beauty in one visit.
