Gokurakuen

This Japanese garden is located in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture. Yasaku Mitobe, who made his fortune in the sake brewing industry, spent approximately 8 years building it as a project to provide work for the unemployed during the economic downturn of the early Showa period. Today, it remains a popular destination for its seasonal scenery.

The grounds feature notable trees and stones collected from within and outside the prefecture, along with the distinctive charm of a stroll garden incorporating ponds, waterfalls, and artificial hills. Its most prominent feature is the many stone pillars standing throughout the garden. Inscribed with words about life's joys and hardships and how to live, they offer lessons to reflect on while strolling through the grounds. The name Gokurakuen also comes from the concept of a garden for self-cultivation, where visitors can learn about both the hardships and pleasures of life.

Another highlight is Chomeisui, a natural spring said to bring the blessing of longevity. The seasonal scenery and words carved into the stone pillars offer a contemplative experience distinctive to this garden.
