Takeshima Island (Aichi Prefecture)

Takeshima is a small island in Mikawa Bay connected to the mainland by a 387-meter bridge. The entire island is designated a National Natural Monument and is a precious natural treasure. Despite its proximity to the mainland, it supports a distinctive plant community rarely found elsewhere in Japan.

At the center of the island stands Yaotomi Shrine, known for blessings of good fortune, matchmaking, and safe childbirth. Counted among Japan’s Seven Benzaiten Shrines, it has attracted many worshippers since ancient times. Four deities are enshrined within the shrine grounds, while mystical sites associated with local legends are scattered across the island, including Snake Cave, linked to the legend of a white snake, Ryujin Cape, and Horoku Rock.

After visiting the shrine, head to the coastal promenade. A walk past rocky shores and beaches while gazing over tranquil Mikawa Bay offers a memorable encounter with the island’s natural surroundings. The sea and sky create different scenery with the changing tides and the time of day. From spring through early summer, visitors can also go clam digging on nearby beaches.

Be sure to visit Takeshima Park at the foot of the bridge as well. This open waterfront recreation area has close ties to Lord Fujiwara no Shunzei, who once developed the area. With its harmonious blend of history and faith, it is a fitting spiritual destination in Gamagori.
