Takeshima Aquarium
An aquarium known for its impressive deep-sea creature exhibits and charming handmade displays.
This aquarium in Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture, has a warm, homey atmosphere where it’s easy to chat with the keepers, and is affectionately known as “Takesui” by locals and fans. It always showcases Approx. 500 species and 4,500 creatures from both saltwater and freshwater habitats.
A major highlight is its deep-sea creature collection, with more than 130 species on display at all times, one of the largest in Japan. Gamagori has long been known for deep-sea fishing, and when rare deep-sea creatures are landed at the port, the aquarium is sometimes given priority access to them. Among them, the Japanese spider crab, the largest arthropod in the world among species living today, stands out for both the quality and quantity of its exhibit. You can even touch one at the touching pool.
Another thing that makes “Takesui” special is its unique exhibits that set it apart from other aquariums. From handmade explanation panels packed with fun information that make you want to stop and read, to displays that reflect the care and affection of the keepers in charge, these exhibits have become a big draw. The lively sea lion and capybara shows are also popular, along with feeding times for otters and Japanese spider crabs that come with commentary from the keepers.
