As soon as you enter the bamboo grove, towering bamboo rises straight into the sky on both sides, with layers of dense bamboo leaves overlapping to form a lush green tunnel. Walking through it feels like entering another world, surrounded by emerald-green bamboo. It feels especially peaceful and is a striking contrast to Kyoto's bustling streets.

Sunlight filters through the gaps in the bamboo leaves, accompanied by the rustling sound of the leaves in the gentle breeze. The whole scene has the distinctive atmosphere of a Japanese garden.

When Arashiyama is mentioned, the first iconic image that comes to mind is probably this stunning Sagano Bamboo Grove Trail. From a distance, the densely packed, straight green bamboo stalks really look like a scene from a wuxia novel where martial arts masters face off. It’s both spectacular and unique.

Once you actually enter the bamboo grove, the surrounding noise instantly fades away, and you immediately feel the cool, refreshing shade of the bamboo. When a gentle breeze blows through, the towering bamboo on both sides sways in the wind and makes creaking sounds. The ethereal sights and sounds make it feel as if you’ve stepped into an ancient martial arts movie, surrounded by a sense of mystery. You can’t help but smile and imagine whether an assassin or wandering swordsman might appear around the next corner. This immersive experience, both peaceful and fun, is truly a unique sight that shouldn’t be missed when visiting Arashiyama.

One of the places I was most looking forward to visiting in Arashiyama, Kyoto, was this bamboo grove filled with Japanese charm. As I walked along the bamboo path, I was surrounded by towering green bamboo, with sunlight filtering through the leaves. The entire path felt peaceful and dreamlike.

Although this is a very popular attraction in Kyoto and there are always plenty of visitors, walking deeper into the grove still lets you experience Arashiyama’s unique atmosphere. Along the way, you can also see rickshaws weaving through the bamboo as the drivers pull their passengers and introduce the scenery. Sometimes they even take guests along routes accessible only by rickshaw, which really adds to the travel atmosphere. I also stopped by Nonomiya Shrine deep in the grove. Although the shrine is small, it has a long history and is famous for prayers for good relationships.

This time in Arashiyama, I wasn’t rushing through an itinerary. I simply strolled slowly through the bamboo grove, took photos, and enjoyed one of Kyoto’s most classic views.

One of the most iconic attractions in Arashiyama, Kyoto. As you enter the towering bamboo grove, lush green bamboo rises on both sides, with sunlight filtering through the leaves, giving the entire path a peaceful, dreamlike atmosphere. Walking through the grove in person, the rustling sound of bamboo leaves in the wind is especially soothing, and the scenery is completely different from Kyoto's ancient temples and traditional streets.

I rented a bike and slowly rode with friends along the winding path deep into the bamboo grove. On both sides, tall, straight bamboo stalks reached toward the sky, while dense bamboo leaves intertwined to form a natural green tunnel. Sunlight filtered through the gaps, casting dappled patterns on the ground. As we rode through, cool breezes blew toward us, and the midsummer heat seemed to fade away without us even noticing.

We also saw a few kids on summer vacation near the bamboo grove, carefully catching and observing insects as if they were conducting an interesting field study!

My first time in Arashiyama, Kyoto. There were so many international tourists, and they were also very kind about helping us take photos. The lush bamboo grove covered the entire sky and was truly spectacular, making me feel very relaxed.

I stayed overnight in Arashiyama and happened to catch the nighttime illumination event, so I walked into the bamboo grove after dark.

The bamboo path, which is usually packed with people, was much quieter at night. Lights illuminated the bamboo along the way. When the wind blew through the grove, the bamboo kept creaking as the stalks bumped into each other. Together with the sound of light rain hitting my umbrella, it felt like a symphony of nature.

There were fewer people, but the overall atmosphere was mysterious. It’s a nighttime walk that takes a little courage.

Because this place is so popular, it usually gets a bit crowded with tourists. If you want to capture the pure, tranquil beauty of the bamboo grove like in the photos, with no one around, the best trick is to point your camera upward or come around 7 or 8 in the morning to enjoy a peaceful walk and the fresh scent of the bamboo.

The whole path honestly isn’t that long. If you take your time walking and snapping photos, you can wrap it up in about half an hour.
