Ukiyo-e has always been one of my favorite art forms, and I get excited whenever I see an exhibition featuring it. If you also enjoy ukiyo-e, consider making time to visit The Sumida Hokusai Museum while in Tokyo. Katsushika Hokusai was born in Sumida and spent most of his life in the area, so the museum highlights his deep connection to his hometown. From “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” to “Hokusai Manga,” you can gain an in-depth understanding of this ukiyo-e master’s creative journey.

“Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” features Mount Fuji as its subject, depicting the mountain from different locations, in different seasons, and from different angles. The especially famous “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” pairs a powerful giant wave with Mount Fuji in the distance, creating a scene full of tension. Through these works, you can not only appreciate his superb technique but also feel as though you’ve stepped into everyday life during the Edo period~ Before leaving, don’t forget to pick out some postcards you like from the gift shop to take home as keepsakes.
