Don’t you spend your time only for transfer on the day of the arrival in Japan or the last day of your holiday? Don’t waste your time! In fact, there are many attractive spots in the surrounding areas of Haneda Airport and Narita Airport. With a concept of “Start a fun holiday right after arriving in Japan, or to have a great time until the last minutes of your holiday,” this article series introduce you plans to fully enjoy all the fun spots near the airports.

This time, we would like to introduce you the surrounding area of Shimbamba Station (Shinagawa Area), where you can enjoy visiting just after arriving in Japan or just before leaving the country as it takes only for approx. 20 minutes via Keikyu Line from Haneda Airport.

Shinagawa flourished in the Edo period (1603- 1868) as a post station town along a major transportation route called the Tokaido Road. You can still enjoy the remnants of this bygone era including townscape, food and skills.

【Shinagawa Shrine】
A shrine in Kita-Shinagawa built in 1187 to pray for maritime safety and for the fulfillment of wishes. The shrine is packed with people during the annual festival held in early June when portable shrines are brought out.

Fujizuka is a minimountain that gives you a taste of what it is like to climb Mount Fuji.

【Shinagawa Jinrikisha】
Take a comfortable ride around the Shinagawa area on a rickshaw. You can also try and see what it’s like to pull a rickshaw yourself. Reservation is essential by phone or via website.

Fee: From ¥1,500 for 10 min. to ¥15,000 for 90 min. (For 2 persons) Other courses, such as a tour around Shinagawa-juku, are also available.

【Kitashinagawa Spa Tenjinyu】
This hot spring contains dark-colored water with the highest concentration of humic substances in Tokyo. Its modern Japanese ambience will melt away your travel fatigue.

【Six facilities, at which you can enjoy a Yakata bune (houseboat) cruise】
A traditional Yakata bune houseboat delivers the atmosphere of Edo era to us. Enjoy cruising through Tokyo Bay and Sumida River feeling the difference of each season. Reservation is required by telephone(Japanese only) or their website.
