Far east of Takayama City, in Okuhida Hot Spring Villages, a ropeway takes you to Shin Hotaka Onsen. From the starting point, Shinhotaka-Onsen Station, to the terminal, Nishi-Hotakaguchi Station, ride the 1st and then 2nd ropeway to enjoy a 3,200m-long journey in the sky.
When you arrive at the Nishi-Hotakaguchi Station at 2,156m above sea level, go up to the observation roof of the station. Mt. Nishihotaka, Yarigatake, Kasagadake and other mountains of the Northern Japanese Alps will be before you in 360-degree panorama! The majestic view was awarded two stars in Michelin Green Guide Japon.
In July of 2020, to commemorate the 50th anniversary, Japan’s only bi-level gondola that runs on the second ropeway was renewed. The relay station, Shirakabadaira, has gained additions of bakery Alps no Panyasan and other facilities for more comfort and fun.
Star-gazing rides in spring, summer and fall, the fall Sunset Ropeway, play in snow and snow-shoe tours in winter, and various other seasonal events are popular.
