Tamai-ya Honpo “Nobori Ayu”

Signature sweets made in homage to the ayu of Nagara River at this veteran shop beloved over 100 years.

Last update :

Tamai-ya Honpo is a veteran confectionery founded in 1908 that still sits along the Kawara-machi Historic Street district streets off the banks of Nagara River.

The “nobori ayu” treats have been the shops best known confection since its doors first opened. It features a “gyuhi” rice cake tucked inside a castella pastry made with an egg-rich blend and high-grade flour.

Gifu is dotted with city shops selling “ayu-gashi”, confections made to mimic the shape of the local sweet-river fish, but Tamai-ya Honpo is said to be the flagship of the “nobori ayu” brand.

The “nobori ayu” sleeve around the packaging features an especially cute packaging, making it perfect as a souvenir or gift.

You can find these sweet treats sold at Tamai-ya Honpo, but also at the Gifu Takashiyama, or inside the JR Gifu Station or JR Gifu Hashima Station ticket gates.
