Among Nagasaki’s tourism sites, the Oranda-zaka (Hollander/Dutch Slope) is well known. It means the remaining cobblestone slope in the Yamate area where people from other countries lived.

While foreigners were living there, residents in Nagasaki called them “Oranda san (Hollander)” and the slopes these foreigners walked on were called the Hollander Slope. There were settlers from other countries as well, but it tells the nearly 300-years of trade with Holland has developed the close relationship between the people in Nagasaki and Holland.

The prominent Hollander Slopes are the one below Kwassui Women’s University, Kwassui Slope and the one in front of Joko-in Temple.
The slope below Kwassui Women’s University was opened while developing the settlement for foreigners. Going up the slope, you will see a Hollander Slope monument, followed by Kassui Slope where students tread on to the Kwassui Women’s University. The slope by Joko-in is a 15-degree steep slope from Ishibashi Station to Higashiyamate. Brick walls and western-style buildings line the Hollander Slope to let you enjoy Nagasaki’s exotic scenery.

Highlights

  • The cobblestone on a rainy day has a quaint ambience.
  • Up the Slope from Joko-in, 7 western-style housings cluster in Higashiyamate.
  • Right by the Hollander Slope memorial, Higashiyamate Ko13bankan allows a tour inside.
  • Kwassui Slope is used in TV ads and movies.
  • The slopes are steep and slippery on rainy days. Come in walking shoes.

During the Edo period, Nagasaki was only open to the Dutch and Chinese. This area used to be where foreigners lived, and there are lots of beautiful Western-style buildings on both sides.

The name sounds really European, but walking here doesn't quite feel that way...
