A Byzantine-style cathedral with a 35m (115 ft)-tall domed roof. To commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the construction of the Holy Resurrection Cathedral began In 1891, designed by Josiah Conder who also designed Rokumeikan.

Its official name is Japanese Orthodox Church Holy Resurrection Cathedral in Tokyo, but in honor of St. Nicholai Kasatkin who introduced the Russian Orthodox church to Japan, it has been called Nicholi-do since the Meiji Period.

After the Russian Revolution in 1917, they lost the support of the Russian Orthodox church. In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed the upper dome and the building was damaged by fire. In 1927, a repair plan started and the building was restored in 1929. In 1962, it was designated as a national important cultural property.

Highlights

  • Blending into the landscape in Ochanomizu, it has become one of the town’s symbols.
