Yushima Tenmangu Shrine, located in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, is one of the three major Tenjin shrines in the Kanto region. Its official name is "Yushima Tenmangu," but it has been affectionately called "Yushima Tenjin" since ancient times.

Founded in 458 AD by an imperial decree of Emperor Yuryaku to enshrine the deity Ame-no-Tajikaraono-Mikoto, it is a historical shrine. Ame-no-Tajikaraono-Mikoto is a god of the earth in Japanese mythology and is revered as a god of strength, victory, good fortune, and sports success. Later in 1355, Sugawara Michizane, also known as Tenjin, was enshrined here at the request of the local residents.

Sugawara Michizane, a nobleman of the Heian period, was a politician, writer, and scholar. His achievements during his lifetime have led to his reverence as a god of learning. Yushima Tenmangu Shrine is popular as one of the leading power spots in Tokyo, offering two blessings: "victory and good luck" from Ame-no-Tajikaraono-Mikoto and "academic achievement" from Sugawara Michizane.

Also known for its plum blossoms since the Edo period, the shrine hosts the "Plum Festival," part of the "Bunkyo Flower Festival," when the blossoms reach their peak in early February. There are many food stalls and events, and the beautifully illuminated blossoms at night have become a harbinger of early spring in Tokyo.
