About 5km to the east from JR Kitsuki Station, Kitsuki Castle stands. This is the area where the castle town prospered under the rule of Lord Matsudaira of the Kitsuki Domain. Samurai residences still remain in this historic townscape, which is designated as an Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Historic Buildings and used often as a location for TV dramas and movies.

The highlights in the castle town are the stone slopes “Suya no Saka” and “Shioya no Saka,” connecting samurai residences and the merchant town on the opposite side. A rental kimono shop is in the neighborhood, helping you walk around and take photos in kimono.

There are other beautiful slopes, “Ameya no Saka”, “Kanjoba no Saka,” and Samurai residences “Ohara-tei,” “Noumi-tei” and “Isoya-tei” available for a tour.

Kitsuki City is on the way from Beppu to Oita Airport. You can stop by and walk around Kitsuki on the last day of the trip. Joining the mini tour with a volunteer guide run by Kitsuki City Tourism Association will let you learn about the city better and use your time effectively (Guide fee 1,000 yen/hour).
