Last update :

Aya Town was registered as a UNESCO Ecopark in 2012 for the large-scale preservation of laurel forest, many Japan’s native species, and for the nature-friendly regional development. Teruha Suspension Bridge, also included in the Kyushu Chuo Sanchi Quasi-National Park, is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world, where you can experience the nature of Aya River Gorge.

Even though Aya Town has a rich nature of laurel forest, there was a deforestation plan in the 1960s. However, the Aya Town Council turned it down and took the matter to the national government to stop it. Afterwards, the whole town endeavored to protect the laurel forest. The suspension bridge was built as a monument of the preservation effort.

Before the suspension bridge, Teruha Forest Museum stands, sharing the life of the forest and creatures in it. Stop by and learn about the forest. After crossing the bridge, a 2km trail will allow you to enjoy a “forest bathing.”
A guided tour is offered if you prefer.(approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes)
