The 400-year old symbol of Marugame City is Hirayama Castle. It was built by a samurai, Ikoma Chikamasa, and his son, Kazumasa, over five years.

The stone walls that are laid from the inner moat to the castle keep are 60m, Japan’s tallest, noted for its characteristic fan shape. The castle keep is one of the rare twelve wooden castle structures in Japan and is a designated national important cultural property. The white building within nature is a graceful sight. You can tour inside. The view from the top floor over the Seto Inland Sea is unforgettable.

The interior of Ote Ichi no Mon Gate is open to the public, showing the equipment that was built to drop stones to protect the castle from enemies. Each season brings a unique event. The castle is lit up in different colors, booths with local gourmet food and many attractions are programmed.
