Uwajima Castle

A castle is a symbol of Uwajima, which is one of the existing 12 castle towers in Japan built by the Uwajima- Date family, and Takatora Toudou , a master of castle construction, rebuilt in 1601.

Takatora Toudou who is historically famous as a warlord and a master of castle construction built Uwajima Castle at hillside with an altitude of 80 m. The castle experienced major repairs taking about 11 years from 1661 by the second Date lord, Munetoshi Date. The castle is one of the existing 12 castle towers in Japan and was selected as a Nationally designated important cultural property.

One of the highlights of Uwajima Castle is the high stonewalls. Each stonewall was built at different times and became differently covered in moss, it is interesting to know each history while walking around. The Tenshu (building) was built on the molded stonewalls, its beautiful white appearance is attractive. The tour inside of the Tensyu is available, when you reach the top floor through steep stairs, you will see an unobstructed view of Uwajima gulf and city.

The castle has been carefully preserved since the construction over 300 years, you can find many highlights on the premises, such as unusual plants, huge trees, and Noboritachimon, which is a City designated cultural property. The mountain where Uwajima Castle is located was designated as a National historical site.
