Located in Mochiidono Center Street, known as Nara’s oldest shopping arcade and a lively gateway to Naramachi, Akemitori specializes in original Japanese hand towels (tenugui). Their designs blend contemporary elements with traditional motifs from the ancient capital of Nara, making them particularly popular as stylish souvenirs.

Each towel is made using Japan’s highest-quality cotton fabric, prized for superior absorbency and quick-drying properties. Using traditional dyeing techniques known as Chusen, artisans carefully dye patterns onto fabric through finely carved Ise Katagami stencils. The vivid colors appear beautifully on both sides, and the texture improves with every use, becoming softer and more appealing over time. Their striking and bold designs go far beyond conventional towels, often resembling artistic paintings.
