Goryokaku, a Western-style fortress, was built in 1866 and served as the political capital of Hokkaido until the new Meiji government took over. It later became a popular tourist attraction after it was opened to the public as "Goryokaku Park" in 1914 and was designated as a national special historic site.

Many relics of the former fortress can still be found in the center of Goryokaku. The cannons, food storage facilities, and other relics of the war are still in place.
There are two cannons, and their appearance distinguishes between the two. One cannon was built in England, and the other in Germany aboard the Meiji government warship "Choyo."

Goryokaku Park is also famous for its beautiful flowers. One is the cherry blossom grove, which is so lovely that it has become synonymous with Goryokaku Park. The sight of approximately 1,530 cherry trees in full bloom is a sight to behold. The other is the wisteria trellis, which blooms a little later than the cherry blossoms and forms a wisteria tunnel. It is recommended to take a walk under the wisteria.
