The Hakodate Seikan Liaison Ship Memorial Museum Mashu Maru was built on the hull of the Tsugaru Maru (2nd generation), a liaison ship that served as the Seikan Liaison Ship and was known as the "bullet train" of the sea. After the ship ended its service in 1988, it was converted into an exhibition ship and opened to the public as a memorial ship, and later reopened in 2003 as the current Hakodate Seiko-Hakodate Liaison Ship Memorial Museum Mashu Maru.

Inside the ship, visitors can tour the wheelhouse and radio communication room, which remain as they were when the ship was in service. Visitors can actually touch the rudder wheel and various ship-handling equipment, making them feel as if they are the captain of the Mashu Maru. In the radio communication room, visitors can try their hand at typing Morse code. This is a rare and precious experience that attracts many visitors, including families.

In addition, the forward green cabin has been remodeled as an exhibition room where visitors can view actual parts and models, and learn about the history and mechanism of the Seikan Liaison Ship through panels and videos. Volunteer guides, who are former crew members, are on standby between 10:00am and 3:00pm, and visitors can ask them questions and learn more about the history and how to operate the ship.
