Hakodate Meiji-kan

This shopping mall is housed in an ivy-twined red brick former post office.

Last update :

The Bay Area is a popular tourist destination in Hakodate. The Hakodate Meiji-kan is a commercial facility located in one section of the bay area, where you can find stores selling products perfect for Hakodate souvenirs.

The impressive building with its massive red brick exterior and ivy leaves growing over the walls is a reused former post office building of Hakodate Post Office built in 1911. The building is popular as a photo spot not only in spring and summer when the red bricks and green leaves provide a vivid contrast, but also in autumn when the ivy leaves turn red, in winter when the building is covered with snow, and even at night when the building is illuminated, giving it a different beauty depending on the season and time of day.

The two-story building is lined with stores selling glassware, music boxes, and products exclusive to Hokkaido and Hakodate, making it convenient for visitors to select souvenirs. There is also a workshop where visitors can try their hand at making music boxes and sandblasting, and a costume rental gallery with about 200 costumes from the end of the Edo period to the Showa period, making it an ideal place to create memories of your trip.
