Yamaga Onsen

Yamaga Onsen is considered one of the oldest hot spring resorts in Kumamoto. It is said to have been discovered when Unochikaharuko, defeated in the Hogen Rebellion, observed injured deer healing their wounds in the hot spring waters. Yamaga Onsen is dotted with 23 public bathhouses and accommodation facilities. The water, known for being gentle on the skin, is believed to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, and joint pain.

Yamaga was a crucial point on the Buzen Highway connecting Kumamoto and Kokura during the Edo period and flourished as a hot spring post town. Even today, buildings from the era, such as the Kojiya founded in the Tenpo period, remain, giving visitors a glimpse into the past. The town offers a culturally rich walking experience with buildings like a nationally designated Important Cultural Property playhouse and a communal bathhouse restored to its Meiji-era appearance.
