Katsuo-ji Temple

Surrounded by a national park in the surrounding area, Katsuo-ji Temple in Minoh is an ancient temple with a history of about 1,300 years, founded in the Nara period (710-794). Within the temple's vast grounds, which cover an area of about 80,000 square meters, are the main hall and temple gate, which were rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori, and Sanpoukoujin Shrine, which is believed to be the first Arakami shrine in Japan.

The temple was once called "the temple that won over the king" because a prayer was made for the emperor's recovery from illness, which was granted, and has been revered by successive military commanders. Even today, there is no end to the number of worshippers who come to the temple to pray for victory in examinations, sports, business, etc., on the "Kachi-Dharma (winning dharma)," seeking the blessing of "winning luck. The Daruma-mikuji, which indicates one's fortune for the year and gives advice on how to improve one's fortune, is also popular.

This is one of the most popular spots in Minoh known for its autumn foliage, and the precincts of the temple dyed in red and yellow and the approach to the temple with its continuous arches of maple trees are beautiful only at this time of year. The temple is also illuminated at night during the fall foliage season, creating a fantastic atmosphere that differs from the solemn atmosphere of the day. In addition to the autumn foliage, there are many other seasonal natural attractions such as cherry blossoms in spring and hydrangeas in summer. Among them, cherry blossoms bloom later than in the plains and can be enjoyed until late April, depending on the variety.
