Akita Inu Kaikan (Akita Dog Hall)
Be soothed by adorable Akita dogs at this hall dedicated to the breed!
The Akita Inu is a large-sized Japanese dog breed recognized as a natural monument. Despite being a large hunting breed, they are popular for their fluffy and cute appearance. Known for the loyal "Hachiko," the Akita Inu is also reputed for its intelligence and loyalty.
The headquarters of the "Akita Inu Preservation Society," a public interest incorporated association aimed at the protection and breeding of Akita dogs, is located on the first floor of the Akita Inu Kaikan. The third floor houses the "Akita Inu Museum," where you can find exhibits on the ecology, history, and various other materials related to the Akita Inu.
On weekdays (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), two Akita dogs are present in the office, and from mid-April to late November, visitors can also see Akita dogs in the outdoor kennels. The opportunity to see actual Akita dogs attracts dog lovers from both Japan and abroad. The fluffy coat of the Akita Inu is sure to provide comfort and healing.
The gift shop sells Akita Inu merchandise, and in front of the hall, there is a bronze statue of "Hachiko of Nostalgia," commemorating the loyal dog born in Odate City.
