Yoshino Jingu Shrine
A serene sacred site at the foot of Mt. Yoshino, dedicated to Emperor Go-Daigo.
At the foot of Mt. Yoshino, this shrine stands on the broad plateau known as Joroku-daira and was founded by imperial order of Emperor Meiji. It enshrines Emperor Go-Daigo of the Southern Court, and the shrine buildings facing due north are said to symbolize his wish to return to the capital. Rebuilt in the early Showa period, the elegant cypress-wood shrine structures combine nagare-zukuri, irimoya-zukuri, and kirizuma-zukuri styles, filling the grounds with a dignified stillness.
In spring, the approach and shrine grounds are wrapped in soft cherry blossom colors, while in autumn, fall leaves add gentle color to the scenery. Especially breathtaking are the rows of cherry trees and the tunnel of autumn leaves beyond the great torii gate. During the Spring Grand Festival on April 29 and the Autumn Grand Festival on September 27, performances such as Urayasu no Mai and other dedication rituals are presented, surrounding the grounds in an elegant atmosphere.
At the shrine office, you will find charms and shrine items that bring an instant sense of delight, including goshuin with kirie paper-cut designs or embroidery, and omamori featuring the inome heart-shaped motif believed to ward off misfortune and invite good fortune. Many visitors also come to pray for good luck, academic success, and victory, and the shrine offers each person a quiet moment for prayer.
