Mount Shigi Chogosonshi-ji Temple

This ancient temple stretches across the middle slopes of Mount Shigi, which rises on the border of Nara and Osaka. It is said to have been founded in 587, when Prince Shotoku experienced a revelation of Bishamonten while praying for victory in battle and built the temple. The mountain name “Shigisan” comes from the idea of “a mountain worthy of faith and reverence,” and since then it has drawn deep devotion as a sacred place for good fortune in competition and wealth.

The giant papier-mâché tiger “Fuku Tora,” over 6 meters long, is a striking symbol of the temple’s tiger-related legends and makes a powerful impression on visitors. At the “Tiger Tunnel,” where you pass through the tiger’s mouth, and the “Kaidan Meguri,” where you feel your way through darkness beneath the main hall, you can enjoy the unique experience of touching the lock of the wish-granting sacred jewel and making a prayer. The stage of the main hall also offers a sweeping view of the Nara Basin.

The National Treasure <i>Shigisan Engi Emaki</i>, preserved at the temple, depicts the miracle tales of the monk Myoren and conveys ancient faith to the present day. Many temple buildings and halls are scattered throughout the grounds, allowing visitors to stroll while sensing the site’s long history. At the temple lodging, you can experience shojin ryori, sutra copying, and morning prayers, another highlight that lets you feel the lifestyle of a mountain temple firsthand.
