Atsuta Jingu, where the Kusanagi no Tsurugi sword, one of the Three Sacred Treasures, is enshrined, is known for its prestige second only to Ise Jingu. Right by the East Gate leading to the shrine approach, Kiyome Mochi Sohonke is a long-established Japanese sweets shop that has welcomed many worshippers since its founding.

Named after a teahouse said to have been visited by worshippers coming to Atsuta Jingu around the mid-Edo period, Kiyome Mochi is a famous confection made of smooth red bean paste wrapped in habutae mochi made with mochiko and shiratamako rice flour. The refined sweetness and smooth texture of the house-made red bean paste, carefully cooked from Hokkaido azuki beans, pair perfectly with the soft, springy bite and silky texture of the habutae mochi. Along with the standard Kiyome Mochi, there are also chestnut-filled, matcha-flavored, and day-of-the-week or seasonal limited items. Another popular item is Kiyome Pan, a bread-like manju filled with house-made chunky red bean paste in dough made with mochiko.

At the shop in front of Atsuta Jingu, you can not only buy sweets but also eat in. In addition to individual items, sets with matcha are also available, making it a great place to stop by and take a break after your visit.
