Mito Sansui has long preserved the tradition of anglerfish hot pot, a local specialty of Ibaraki Prefecture. In 2023, it was selected as one of Mito’s long-established famous restaurants worth preserving for future generations.

The restaurant’s signature dish is anglerfish hot pot. It is seasoned with a secret roasted miso blended with anglerfish liver into a soy sauce-based broth. Its distinctive savory aroma and rich flavor are its defining features. Anglerfish dishes are usually only available during the colder months, but in summer, the restaurant serves steamed anglerfish in a bamboo steamer and anglerfish sukiyaki. It is rare to be able to enjoy these dishes year-round, and many visitors come from all over Japan to try them. The natto kaiseki, made with Ibaraki Prefecture specialties, is also unique (available only from April to September). In addition, the restaurant offers a wide selection of kamameshi and set meals prepared using the same cooking methods since it first opened.

The interior is a calm space with a traditional Japanese style. There are table seats, counter seats, tatami rooms, and private rooms. The restaurant also has playful touches, such as a capsule toy machine with anglerfish chopstick rests. Nearby is Kairakuen, famous for its plum blossoms, making this an easy place to stop by before or after a stroll.
