Tsuboya Kashiho
A long-established Japanese sweets shop known as the birthplace of Botchan Dango.
Tsuboya Kashiho is a long-established Japanese sweets shop founded in 1883. A famous confection from Matsuyama, it is said to have inspired the dumpling shop that appears in Botchan, the novel by Japanese author Natsume Soseki. It is known nationwide as the birthplace of Botchan Dango.
Botchan Dango is the shop’s signature item. At Tsuboya Kashiho, each skewer is handmade using smooth red bean paste, white bean paste, and matcha bean paste made with Shumari azuki beans and Otebo beans from Hokkaido. The bean paste contains no eggs or milk, and is known for its delicate, refined sweetness. The shop also sells a wide variety of Japanese sweets and traditional penny candy, including shoyu mochi, another famous confection from Matsuyama.
There are four seats in the eat-in space inside the shop. The main focus is selling Japanese sweets. It is often used as a place to pick up souvenirs. Located along Dogo Shopping Street, it is also close to Dogo Onsen, one of Matsuyama’s most famous hot spring facilities. It’s an easy stop before or after sightseeing around Matsuyama.
