Uto Onsen Matagi no Yu

A trip to enjoy hot springs and discover Matagi culture at the foot of Mt. Moriyoshi in Ani Uto, Akita.

Last update :

Uto Onsen Matagi no Yu is located in Ani Uto, Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture. This hot spring inn features free-flowing natural spring water and is surrounded by the rich nature at the southern foot of Mt. Moriyoshi. Set in the Ani area, said to be the birthplace of Matagi culture, it has long been cherished as a renowned hot spring by both locals and visitors.

With a source temperature of 56.6°C, the spring is a sodium, calcium chloride spring that retains heat well and helps prevent chills after bathing. In addition to overnight stays, day-use bathing is also available. Meals feature rustic country-style dishes made with the bounty of the mountains. Popular options include the full-course game meal plan, where guests can enjoy Matagi specialties such as bear hot pot, venison grilled on a ceramic plate, and simmered rabbit. For first-time game eaters, the rabbit hot pot plan is also well received.

At the on-site Doburoku Brewery, they make the additive-free doburoku “Matagi no Yume” using homegrown rice and underground water from Mt. Moriyoshi. Overnight guests can enjoy unpasteurized fresh doburoku before heat treatment. The surrounding area also offers many sightseeing spots, including Mt. Moriyoshi Ani Ski Resort and Kumakuma Park, making this an inn where you can experience the charms of the Matagi village through hot springs, food, and culture.
