Shizushi Limestone Cave Park
A nature-rich park offering cave exploration and outdoor activities.
This park is home to Kyoto Prefecture's only limestone cave, which is designated a prefectural natural monument. The cave is a vertical shaft measuring 52.5 meters in total length with an elevation difference of 25.1 meters. Its steep drops and winding passages are distinctive features. Vertical limestone caves are rare in Japan, and the nearly vertical descent by stairs makes exploring it a thrilling experience.
The cave remains cool at around 12°C to 15°C throughout the year, attracting many visitors as a natural retreat from the heat, especially in midsummer. It is also an important habitat for cave-dwelling bats, including the little Japanese horseshoe bat.
The park has bungalows, campsites, and a shallow fishing pond where even beginners can safely fish for rainbow trout. Visitors may take their catch home or grill and eat it at the on-site BBQ area. A spring festival is held during Golden Week, with wild vegetable tempura, udon, bamboo shoot rice, and other foods available for purchase.
