Ogionsaa (Kagoshima Gion Festival)

A traditional festival known for its procession of 2,500 participants.

Last update :

Rooted in the Gion Festival held at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, this traditional festival dates back to the Edo period and is held to pray for protection from epidemics and thriving business. Held over three days including the eve festival and main festival, it is one of Kagoshima’s signature summer traditions.

The biggest highlight is the Shinko procession held during the main festival, with a total of 2,500 participants. Centered around Tenmonkan, Kagoshima’s premier downtown district, the procession parades along a route of Approx. 2.5km in a stately, time-honored style, featuring groups such as the "Tsuyubarai," "Ohoko," "Goshoguruma," "Jikatasha," and "Junin Taijo." In 2012, it was designated as a Kagoshima City Intangible Folk Cultural Property as the Kagoshima Gion Festival (Ogionsaa) Procession Event. Another highlight is the "Chigoage," in which small children are lifted high above the mikoshi to pray for good health.

The eve festival is held at several locations around the city, centered on Waterfront Park. Kitchen cars line up with freshly prepared food, sweets, beer, and shochu, and the illuminations light up at night. Stage shows such as dance performances and karaoke contests add to the festive atmosphere.
