Kusasenri

Mount Eboshi is one of the 5 peaks found in the center of Mount Aso. Here you’ll find Kusasenri, the breathtakingly vast, emerald green grasslands that expand northwards. Many textbook writings, as well as classical poets and song writers have immortalized its beauty in their works, making Kusasenri one of the most iconic images that people know when thinking of Mount Aso.

On this visit to Kusasenri in Aso, I was amazed by the vast green grasslands before me. The expansive fields and Mount Aso complement each other, creating a magnificent natural landscape that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. Horses grazing peacefully add to the calm, laid-back atmosphere.

Walking across the grasslands, breathing in the fresh air, and feeling the gentle breeze was incredibly relaxing. From higher ground, you can admire the sweeping view of Mount Aso and the surrounding plains, a stunning reminder of nature's grandeur and wonder.

This trip to Kusasenri not only introduced me to Kyushu's distinctive natural beauty but also let me experience the vastness and splendor of nature. I hope to return someday to see the scenery in different seasons and create more unforgettable travel memories.

Taiho Ramen Head Store

This famous pork bone ramen restaurant was established in Kurume in 1953 (Showa 28). For over half a century since its founding, the restaurant takes pride in its "call back soup," constantly replenished and never left empty, thanks to its unique technique called "call back." The mellow soup, with its rich umami and deep richness, is so beloved that it is said among ramen enthusiasts, "Do not talk about pork bone ramen without eating Taiho Ramen."

During my trip to Fukuoka, I made a special visit to the original Taiho Ramen location in Kurume to try its famous local tonkotsu ramen. The steaming broth had a rich aroma and a deep, smooth flavor without being overly greasy. The thin noodles soaked up plenty of broth, filling every bite with bold pork-bone flavor. The chashu, wood ear mushrooms, and green onions added plenty of texture and depth.

The restaurant retains a strong nostalgic Japanese atmosphere, and the friendly service gave me a real sense of Kurume ramen's history and character. This meal not only satisfied my taste buds but also deepened my appreciation of Japanese ramen culture. If I get another chance to visit Fukuoka, I will definitely return for another unforgettable bowl of Taiho Ramen.

Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge is a narrow v-shaped chasm made over thousands of years by the Gokase River’s erosion of Mt. Aso’s volcanic rock. This spectacular place is surrounded by cliffs that average 80 meters in height (reaching up to 100 meters) and extend along for 7 kilometers. Takachiho Gorge has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

On this trip to Kyushu, Japan, I visited the beautiful Takachiho Gorge. As soon as I entered the gorge, I was greeted by towering basalt cliffs and a crystal-clear, emerald-green stream. The scenery was truly spectacular. Walking along the trail, listening to the flowing water, and breathing in the fresh air made me feel completely relaxed, as if all my worries had disappeared.

Takachiho Gorge’s famous Manai Falls cascades down from above, creating a stunning natural picture against the lush green forest. It was absolutely breathtaking. This trip not only allowed me to take in the magnificent scenery, but also gave me a greater appreciation for the beauty of nature. I hope to visit Takachiho Gorge again someday to see it in different seasons and make more wonderful memories.

Kinrin Lake

Kinrin Lake is one of many popular tourist spots in the hot springs town of Yufuin. The lake sits under Mt. Yufu and as such was called takemoto-no-ike (lit. “lake under the mountain”) for years. However, it was renamed to Kinrin, or “golden scales”, by Mori Kuso in 1884 when he saw the golden glimmering scales of fish as they swam at sunset.

Visiting Kinrin Lake in Yufuin, Japan, was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip. Standing by the lake, I saw the clear, calm water reflecting the blue sky, white clouds, and surrounding trees. The scenery was so beautiful and uplifting that I couldn’t resist taking out my camera to capture it.

As I strolled slowly along the lakeshore, everything was peaceful. All I could hear was the breeze rustling through the treetops and birds singing, which made me appreciate the beauty of nature. Although I didn’t get to see the famous morning mist that appears in fall and winter, the lake and mountain views were still moving. It reminded me that every season has its own unique charm.

There are also many interesting shops and great places to eat near Kinrin Lake. You can sample local snacks while walking around and enjoy a leisurely visit. This trip not only let me admire the beautiful scenery, but also taught me to slow down and truly appreciate my surroundings. I hope to return to Kinrin Lake someday to experience it in another season. I’m sure it will bring even more wonderful surprises and lasting memories.

SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto

Opened in 2019, "SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto" is a large multi-complex facility featuring approximately 150 stores, including fashion, cosmetics, and restaurants. It also houses a major event venue, "Kumamoto-jo Hall," a 9-screen cinema complex, "TOHO Cinemas," "KOKO HOTEL Premier Kumamoto," as well as offices and condominiums.

SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto is conveniently located, with plenty of shops and dining options. It’s a relaxing place to browse and shop. The rooftop garden offers open views of Kumamoto Castle, and you can pick up a variety of local souvenirs all in one place. Definitely worth a stop.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Dazaifu Tenmangu is the head shrine of 10,000 different shrines across Japan dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara Michizane. Sugawara was an acclaimed scholar who was deemed innocent posthumously after being exiled to Dazaifu by Kyoto’s Imperial Court. The main hall was built over his grave and has been preserved as a sacred site of Tenjin worship for over 1100 years.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is rich in history and culture. The lively approach is fun to explore, while the shrine itself is serene and majestic, creating a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. Trying the umegae mochi made the trip even more memorable and special.

Lake Shidaka

Nestled on the southeastern slopes of Mount Tsurumi at 600 meters above sea level, Lake Shidaka is a picturesque highland lake that forms part of the Aso-Kujū National Park. Surrounded by stunning mountains, including the majestic Mount Yufu, it offers breathtaking natural scenery year-round.

Lake Shidaka has crystal-clear water and is surrounded by mountains, creating a peaceful and picturesque setting. Strolling along the lakeshore, you can take in the beautiful scenery and feed the swans and ducks. It’s a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city—a truly refreshing travel experience.

Chikuzen Province’s First Shrine - Hakozakigu

Believed to have been founded in the Heian period (794-1185), Hakozaki Shrine in Fukuoka is regarded as one of Japan’s three great Hachiman shrines, alongside Usa Jingu in Oita and Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto. As the chief shrine of the former Chikuzen Province, it has long been a place of deep reverence for the local people.

Hakozakigu is a historic shrine in Fukuoka with a solemn atmosphere and lush greenery throughout the grounds. Visitors can pray for good fortune, victory, and protection from misfortune while admiring the beautiful traditional architecture. It’s a cultural landmark well worth a visit.

Ohori Park

Ohori Park is located in downtown Fukuoka City, only two stations away from Tenjin Station, but is a favorite place for citizens to relax and enjoy the abundant nature centered around a large pond.

Ohori Park is beautiful, with a wide, peaceful lake and a lakeside path that’s perfect for walking or jogging. Each season brings its own charm, and visitors can also enjoy the Japanese garden and lovely natural scenery. It’s a great place to unwind and take a leisurely stroll in central Fukuoka.

Fukuoka Anpanman Children's Museum in Mall

All the joys of Japan’s beloved animated character “Anpanman” await for you to find here at Kyushu’s only Anpanman theme park. This cherished destination waits on the 5th and 6th floors of Hakata Riverain, a shopping center you can easily get to thanks to its directly connection Nakasu-Kawabata Station, a stop just 8-minute subway ride from Fukuoka Airport. The glass-roofed atrium space allows visitors to play regardless of the weather.
