As a devoted fan of chocolate-and-cookie combinations, LOTTE’s chocolate-filled sticks are a pocket snack I always stock up on whenever I visit Japan.

What I like most is the slightly salty, savory flavor of the outer cookie stick, which blends perfectly with the sweet chocolate filling packed inside. The combination of sweet and salty is rich but never feels too heavy.

As someone who loves to cook, I used to have to buy Kayanoya products through a Japanese proxy shopping service. When I first saw their simple, additive-free ingredients, they made a very good impression on me. My first encounter with Calbee Kappa Ebisen was actually while feeding seagulls at Amanohashidate. Later, I couldn’t resist buying a bag at the supermarket to try for myself, and I found the flavor really appealing.

Although they look a little like the shrimp crackers commonly found in Taiwan, they actually have a lighter flavor and aren’t too salty at all, allowing you to taste the pure shrimp flavor even more. During this trip to Okinawa, I was also pleasantly surprised to find a special locally exclusive flavor.

I like the individually wrapped small bags, which are extremely convenient to carry around. Whenever I got hungry during the trip, I could simply pull a bag out of my backpack and immediately satisfy my craving. If you’re craving a small savory snack, I highly recommend keeping a few bags in your backpack. They’re definitely a great companion for satisfying cravings while traveling.
Pocky Chocolate

Pocky was created in 1966 as the world’s first rod-shaped chocolate sweet. It is a rod-shaped pretzel snack covered in a chocolate coating, and it has a very pleasant texture. The combination of that delicious flavor with a way to keep your hands clean after snacking made them into a huge hit.

When it comes to classic chocolate cookies, Pocky is also on my list. Whenever I travel to Japan, I make sure to stop by Don Quijote to hunt for uncommon large packages or regional flavors.

For example, I once bought a large package of rich matcha Pocky in Kyoto, and I also picked up the sweet Amaou strawberry flavor in Kyushu. Whenever I come across these special seasonal or local limited editions, I can’t resist bringing a few boxes home. They’re satisfying to enjoy myself and are also very popular as souvenirs for friends. The fun of discovering delicious limited-edition flavors in different places is one of the little things I look forward to most whenever I travel to Japan.
