Hokkaido, about an hour and a half from Tokyo by plane, is Japan’s leader in fishery yield and agricultural production output. In other words, Hokkaido is an area with an abundance of seafood, vegetables, meat, and other delightful ingredients. The quality of its products is well-known not only within Japan, but overseas as well.

Hokkaido’s most developed city is Sapporo. Sapporo is a gourmet paradise, packed with a variety of quality ingredients like freshly-harvested vegetables and dairy, fresh seafood, and brand-name meats.

Sapporo is an intense food battleground where a variety of restaurants, long-standing and new, make use of the area’s abundance of ingredients. This time we will be introducing 6 gourmet dishes and our picks for restaurants to try them at the next time you go to Sapporo.

1. Ramen

With approximately 2,000 ramen shops all over the city, Sapporo reigns supreme as Japan’s kingdom of ramen. There are a variety of types of ramen available, like traditional miso ramen with its origins in Sapporo, seafood tonkotsu ramen with soy sauce flavor, shrimp-based ramen, ramen made without any artificial flavors, and ramen made exclusively with local ingredients. Before your trip, be sure to research ramen shops that will suit your preferences.

Our Chosen Restaurant is “Yamaarashi Kurotora”

This ramen shop is known for its rich pork and chicken broth, made with pork bones and chicken bones. The soup is made using pork from carefully selected Hokkaido-raised pigs. Their secret ingredient is sweet backfat! Seating is counter-only, so you can easily visit even alone.

2. Soup Curry

This take on curry began here, in soup-loving Sapporo. Curry soup is characterized by a thin curry sauce made with spices and vegetables, chicken, and seafood bouillon. It pairs well with sweet and fresh Hokkaido-local vegetables. The same as with ramen, each soup curry restaurant has its own unique take on the dish, so there’s a certain fun to finding one that matches your tastes!

Our Chosen Restaurant is “Soup Curry GARAKU”

This restaurant is known for its mild soup, made with around 30 ingredients, including pork bones. They also offer an abundance of toppings for their soup, like half-boiled eggs, okra, and cheese. We recommend their “Kamifurano Lavender Pork Shabu and Seven Mushroom Kinoko No Mori.” This dish offers up a beautiful harmony between the mellow Japanese-style soup and the gentle sweetness of the meat from Hokkaido’s Furano.

3. Jingisukan

Jingisukan is a local dish that is made with mutton, unusual even in Japan. There are many restaurants in Sapporo that specialize in jingisukan, and the dish pairs amazingly well with a cold draft beer. The meat used in jingisukan is usually either “mutton” or “lamb,” depending on the age of the animal used. “Lamb,” the meat of young sheep, is more tender and has less odor to it. The meat is usually either pickled in sauce or cooked then dipped in sauce, and the cooking style depends on the restaurant. Heat up the special jingisukan grill that’s raised in the center, and try the meat and vegetables with your preferred seasonings, whether sauce or salt or even lemon!

Our Chosen Restaurant is “Sapporo Beer Garden”

The Sapporo Beer Garden exists inside of a red brick building built in 1890 that was originally a sugar processing plant, and here you can enjoy jingisukan alongside fresh beer made in the facility itself. Their “Fresh Lamb Jingisukan With Vegetables” uses fresh lamb that has little odor and a gentle flavor. We recommend eating it with salt and pepper as well as the facility’s special sauce.

4. Seafood

As it’s surrounded by ocean, Hokkaido is a veritable treasure trove of fresh seafood. Feast on seafood prepared by skilled chefs that bring out the best of the ingredients in Sapporo, where you can get the top-notch ingredients. The options are almost limitless, from seafood donburi topped with plenty of seafood like uni and crab, to sushi at the counter where you can watch the chef shape the nigiri before your eyes, to conveyor belt sushi where the sushi is carried around the belt on plates. Choose a restaurant based on your budget and personal preferences!

Our Chosen Restaurant is “Nagoyakatei Sushi Shiroishi Hondori Shop”

This conveyor belt sushi restaurant sources its super-fresh ingredients directly from fishing ports in Hokkaido. After you sit, beautiful mouth-watering plates of sushi pass by you one after the other, so you can choose your favorite types of sushi. We recommend ordering their “Kobore Ikura,” packed with so much ikura (salmon roe) that it’s overflowing from the rice.

5. Sweets

Blessed with an abundance of high-quality milk and wheat, Hokkaido is renowned as a “paradise of sweets.” As they’re made with quality cream and butter, sweets here like soft-serve ice cream and pancakes are exceptionally delicious. In Sapporo, “finishing parfaits,” eaten as a tasty ending after drinking, have become super popular, so many shops are open late. We also recommend visiting cafés that offer popular sweets that make great souvenirs from Hokkaido. Be sure to check out popular shops and enjoy some freshly-made Hokkaido sweets!

Our Chosen Shop is “ISHIYA CAFÉ”

This café is run by Ishiya, the same confectionery company that makes the hugely-popular “Shiroi Koibito” cookies. Here you’ll find a carefully-crafted menu packed with delicious choices like fluffy hotcakes.

6. Alcoholic Beverages

When you go out to eat on your vacation, you’re sure to want to try local drinks as well. Hokkaido produces many different types of alcohol, including sake, beer, wine, shochu, whiskey, and brandy, in its variety of climates. Sapporo is packed with restaurants and bars where you can enjoy those local alcoholic beverages alongside local wild game, quality vegetables grown in mineral-rich soil with snowmelt water, and quality cheeses. Take a while to enjoy your time in Sapporo, a true gourmet city.

Our Chosen Restaurant is “Barcom Sapporo”

Here you can enjoy delightful dishes made with local ingredients from Hokkaido, including around 100 varieties of wine, meat, vegetables, cheese, and mushrooms. The selection of Hokkaido wine focuses on varieties from the Sorachi area on the outskirts of Sapporo. We recommend trying their “Pâté de Campagne.” This is a pâté made with 4 types of meat from Hokkaido: Hokkaido deer, chicken, pork, and beef. It pairs beautifully with the “Tsukiura Wine Dornfelder 2011,” a wine made from Hokkaido grapes. (Tsukiura is an area around 2 hours by car from Sapporo that overlooks Lake Toya.)
