Huge Portions in Osaka! Kamameshi for Lunch at “Irori to Kamameshi Shizuru”
I decided to grab lunch at “Irori to Kamameshi Shizuru,” located in Dojima, an office town in Osaka. Their famous kamameshi (a rice, meat, and vegetable dish served in a small pot) is only available on weekdays and it’s supposed to be very affordably priced.
The “Shizuru” in the restaurant’s name means “sizzle,” and it’s supposed to bring forth thoughts of appetizing foods.
“Shizuru-kan” also can mean “dazzling,” and it’s a phrase that’s even used in the film industry.
After being seated at the counter, before my eyes I saw the “irori” (hearth). While it’s only used in the evening, it can be used to deliciously prepare a variety of ingredients.
Supposedly the kamameshi is prepared in single-person portions.
The lunch menu is exclusively a daily rotating menu. Each day features a set meal that includes kamameshi.
The evening menu features dishes cooked in the irori made with various ingredients delivered fresh from the source, as well as (of course) kamameshi.
Today’s lunch dish was…
Saba miso-ni (miso-simmered mackerel) and garlic chive kamameshi with a scallop cream croquette. (880 yen)
That’s so much food!
First up was the freshly-cooked “saba miso-ni and garlic chive kamameshi.”
Even before taking a single bite, I could tell it was gonna be good.
Of course, the kamameshi had plenty of saba miso-ni and garlic chives, but it was also packed with lots of other ingredients too!
The bottom of the bowl even had okoge (crispy scorched rice)!
The kamameshi is scooped up from the edges with a wooden spoon, then served up in a bowl.
Of course, the rice was cooked perfectly and was piping hot!
The rich, umami flavors of the saba miso-ni blended perfectly with the unique aroma from the garlic chives, creating a refreshing overall flavor.
Additionally, you can even taste the delicate flavors of the dashi, making it a very pleasant and homey dish!
The palm-sized scallop cream croquette had amazing texture!
Of course, it was fresh out of the fryer and nice and hot!
Inside of the delightfully crispy exterior was a soft scallop cream filling.
The croquette also paired great with the special sauce – yum!
I thought the soup was standard miso soup, but instead it was tonjiru.
The pork paired beautifully with the diced potatoes, cooked to a melt-in-your-mouth texture!
I ended up wishing I had ordered some sake…
The coldness of the tofu made it the perfect palate cleanser after the kamameshi!
If you have any leftover kamameshi, you can have them make it into onigiri for you.
What a great thing to offer!
The price of my meal was super reasonable, but they still served up huge portion sizes. I was super satisfied with my lunch!
